What Age Should Athletes Start Training?

When parents hear the words athletic training, they may picture heavy weights, intense conditioning, or sport-specific workouts designed to make an athlete bigger, faster, and stronger. With that picture in mind, it’s understandable to wonder: How young is too young to start training?

But training for a young athlete doesn’t—and shouldn’t—look the same as training for a high school or college athlete.

At its foundation, youth athletic training is about learning how to move. Running, jumping, landing, balancing, throwing, changing direction, and controlling the body are all skills that can be developed through age-appropriate training. And for younger athletes, much of that development can happen through something kids already love to do: play.

Athletic Development Starts With Movement

Children don’t need to wait until their teenage years to begin developing athletic abilities.

Coordination, balance, agility, body awareness, speed, and fundamental movement skills all contribute to what is often called physical literacy—the confidence and competence to move effectively in a variety of activities and environments.

Think of physical literacy much like learning to read. Children learn letters and sounds before they’re expected to read a novel. Similarly, young athletes need opportunities to develop a “movement vocabulary” before they’re expected to master more complex athletic skills.

Learning how to land with control, maintain balance, accelerate, decelerate, change direction, brace the core, or perform a bodyweight squat may seem simple. But these foundational skills give athletes something to build upon as they grow.

What Does the Long-Term Athletic Development Model Tell Us?

The Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD) model takes a long-term approach to developing young athletes rather than focusing exclusively on short-term sports performance.

An important principle of long-term athletic development is that children should be given opportunities to develop athleticism progressively as they grow and mature. Training should account for an athlete’s physical, psychological, and social development—not simply their chronological age.

That means there isn’t one birthday when a child suddenly becomes “ready” to train.

Instead, the type and complexity of training should evolve alongside the athlete.

For younger children, that might mean developing coordination, balance, speed, agility, and fundamental movement skills through games, races, jumping, throwing, bodyweight movements, and other forms of play.

Importantly, training should still be fun. Games, challenges, races, and friendly competition can help young athletes develop these foundational skills while creating positive experiences with exercise and movement.

As athletes demonstrate greater movement competency, coaches can progressively introduce more structured resistance exercises, plyometrics, speed and agility drills, and increasingly challenging movements. Over time, those foundational abilities can support more advanced strength, power, and sport-performance training.

So, What Age Should an Athlete Start Training?

There isn’t one perfect age that applies to every child.

A better question for parents may be: Is this training appropriate for my child’s current stage of development?

A young athlete who can listen to coaching instructions, participate safely in a group environment, and demonstrate the maturity needed to learn new movements can begin benefiting from age-appropriate athletic development. From there, the program should progress based on the athlete’s abilities—not simply the number of candles on their birthday cake.

At Redline Athletics, athletes can begin training as young as 8 years old, with the average Redline athlete being approximately 11½ years old

At these ages, athletic development is about building a foundation for whatever comes next. By developing movement skills, strength, confidence, and a love of physical activity, young athletes can build upon that foundation throughout adolescence and beyond.
