Since 1987, I have spent anywhere from $2,00-$10,000 yearly on my professional development. Beginning with Health and Fitness Experts like Jack Lalanne and Bill Pearl, to 100’s of Conferences and Certifications across 40 years in the industry learning from the best of each in Strength Training, Nutrition, Speed and Agility, Recovery, Mobility, Program Design, and Long-Term Athletic Development.
While in College:
Certifications Include: Certified Physical Preparation Specialist (CPPS) Level 1, 2 and CPPS-F (Football) International Youth Conditioning Association’s Youth Conditioning Specialist (YCS), Youth Fitness Specialist (YFS) Levels 1,2, and 3, Certified Athletic Development Specialist (CADS), Certified Speed and Agility Specialist (CSAS) Levels 1,2,3 and 4, Youth Nutrition Specialist (YNS), High school Strength and Conditioning Coach (HSSCC), Champion Performance Specialist (CP-S), Pitching Mechanics Certified, Mental Performance Mastery (MPM) and more than 35 other Certifications related to Training Specializations.
Professional Experience:
My first professional Coaching experience began in 1983 for the Boys and Girls Clubs (Panther Unit) where we saw as many as 900 youth per day. I oversaw their Weightlifting program training amateur Boxers, (as well as some professions who utilized our facilities) Dry Board Diving, Basketball and trained Break-dancers in Gymnastics and flexibility. In 1987, the Fitness Connexxion (a state-of-the-art training center) opened, and I was asked to join their staff. This facility featured physician-led assessments for all aspects of metabolic health and strength, cutting-edge equipment and attracted some of the Top strength athletes, (powerlifters) bodybuilders and college athletes from a wide area. (My first College to NFL athlete to train was here). 1990 found me at Huguley Fitness Center (FW) overseeing training and the interaction and transitions of Physical Therapy, Work-hardening, Medical Assessment Lab and Medically supervised Weight Loss patients in addition to Program Design for General Population, all Sports and Senior members of the facility. In 1997, I was asked to come alongside one of the previous Fitness Connexxion owners in a new, 24/7 staffed facility called Fit for Life Center. We became the #1 fitness center in Fort Worth for Personal Training, maintaining the fitness of the Personal Protection staff of some of Fort Worth’s ‘First Families’ (Tactical Fitness) and grew from one location to four across my seven years with the company. During this period, the City of Fort Worth approached me about creating a long-running (4 years) series of television shorts for the channel they were programming called 4 Minute Fitness. The success of Four Minute Fitness caught the attention of a Nation-wide (40 million homes) Television and Radio ministry based here and was offered a part-time, paid position as On-Air talent discussing health and fitness topics on their live, daily shows and creating one-minute segments for radio broadcast across the country and around the world. The opportunity to impact, encourage and equip cities, churches and ministries around the world soon grew to overshadow impacting Fort Worth alone and when I was offered a full-time, ministry position with the North American Mission Board’s Radio and Television Commission, I jumped at the chance. I had come to know Christ as my Savior at 11 years old in Curtis Avenue Baptist Church, my grandmother’s church, in Augusta, Georgia. It wasn’t until my joining this ministry that I discovered that the forerunner to this Media Ministry had been my grandmother’s singular focus of ministry support across her lifetime. She went on to be with the Lord in my early 20’s, but it was if her giving had worked, with God’s providential hand, to prepare this place for me across the decades. After seven years, the ministry relocated to Atlanta and family concerns prevented my move, I returned to the Gym business, first at Fit For Life Center, but quickly after, opening a facility in partnership with a wrestling Coach in Fort Worth called Bolt Street Gym. Our early focus was training Boxers, Martial Artists and Wrestlers, but soon branched into Rehab, Powerlifting and Bodybuilding Competition prep. We now see Tactical Athletes from across all the Fort Worth Police Department’s SWAT, SRT, Gang Enforcement and a variety of other roles 24/7. After Bolt Street had been open about 3 years, I was struck by the lack of great Youth Athletic Development in my area of Crowley and Burleson and Transforming Athletics was born. First engaging a local church to use their multipurpose facility to provide classes, I began training with a handful of Football, Basketball and Track athletes. Out of this initial, small group came one of the current Philadelphia Eagles’ top-performing players and a scholarship Basketball player who then entered the ministry. In the years since, Transforming Athletics has improved the abilities of 100’s of local youth athletes from a dozen area towns and seen most go to the Next Level as scholarship athletes. A little over two years ago, I began hearing that a Redline Athletics location was coming into Crowley/Burleson. Researching their offerings, I was fascinated by the Fusionetics technology they use to assess Athletic Readiness for Sport. After first unsuccessfully trying to purchase a license to use the system for my company (only Redline and Baylor’s Sports Medicine facility are licensed in Texas), I was asked by the previous ownership to join staff and the rest, is history…
While in High School:
I competed in Swimming (3 strokes) and Gymnastics for my school, (Southwest High School) at the beginning of my senior year, we lost our gymnastics Coach, and I began to work alongside the Tennis Coach, who was tasked with coaching our program, and successfully developed dozens of skilled athletes on a variety of apparatus.
At 17 years old, I wondered how ‘well’ (fit, athletically capable, durable and functional) someone could be, and this question marked the first step on a life-long journey as to how “fearfully and wonderfully made” we truly are. For many years, my passion was restoring life and capability to ‘dry bones’ as adults had let their fitness slip away or were impacted by injury, but across those years, I discovered that ‘the firmer the foundations, the sturdier the building for a life-time’. The most important periods for developing lifetime physical capabilities are during the ages of 6 to 9 and 10 to 13 years old since this is the time when the interactions between the brain, nervous system and muscular system are the most ‘plastic’ (able to be developed). Yes, wildly Athletic Freaks are occasionally born, but hacking this system of Athletic Development has been the biggest part of my study, application and success across my career, but unlike Frankenstein who created a Monster, I have spent most of my life creating Monstrously successful Athletes of all ages and I would like to do the same for You and Yours.
